Roma – Chris Smalling told of Manchester United’s bad treatment to him before moving to AS Roma. The 30-year-old is frustrated that United didn’t tell him the club’s plans for the 2020/2021 season.
Chris Smalling, including the old face that adorned the United squad. Together with Phil Jones and David de Gea, he was a player who was bought by Manchester United during the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
United bought Smalling from Fulham in 2010 for 8 million euros. At that time, along with Phil Jones, Smalling was prepared to replace Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Chris Smalling played 24 matches in the Premier League 2018/2019 season. Although playing an important role, the English player was released to AS Roma the following season.
Chris Smalling played quite well for Roma in the 2019/2020 season on loan. However, United had refused to give a contract extension when the season was slower. Smalling also did not play in the Europa League.
Smalling was then in an obscure position in United’s squad. In the end, he officially became a Roma player on the last day of the transfer window after being purchased for 15 million euros.
“I thought maybe that was the lowest point in my career at United,” Smalling told the Telegraph.
“It was an unexpected surprise. How would they treat them, if I had been told earlier – and I didn’t want to hope for Solskjaer – I would have made other options.”
“I’m just a little frustrated,” said the 30-year-old.
Manchester United did not want to let Chris Smalling go to AS Roma on the pretext of an inappropriate price. Meanwhile, Solskjaer, in front of the media, said that there was still a chance for Smalling to enter United’s first team.
“One, I want to be informed first. Second, I can only move on the last day of the Italian transfer market. The transfer in England is closed and I am in a very bad situation,” said Smalling.
“I have to decide. After I spoke to Solskjaer, he said: ‘I’m not sure when you will play again.’ In an ideal situation I would know at the start of the summer and make plans.”
“My wife recently had children too. There are many things that happened at the last minute,” concluded Smalling.
